Anticipating and preparing for the biggest day of the year!

Advent: A Season of Anticipation and Preparation

For centuries, the Church has observed the Sundays leading up to Christmas as Advent, a time of anticipation, preparation, and longing for the coming of Christ. Each element of Advent carries deep significance, starting with its traditional colors. Purple represents penitence and royalty, reminding us that a King is coming, and connects to Easter as the King who came to die for us. Pink, or rose, symbolizes joy, while green represents hope and new, everlasting life. White reflects the purity of Christ, the spotless Lamb of God.

The Advent wreath, a prominent symbol during this season, is a circle representing God's eternity and endless mercy, having no beginning and no end. This unbroken circle also mirrors the circles found in Celtic crosses, reflecting the timeless nature of faith. The five candles on the wreath signify the light of the world—Jesus Christ—and are lit progressively, one at a time, as we prepare our hearts for His arrival. Each candle has a specific meaning: the first symbolizes expectation or hope, the second joy, the third peace, the fourth love, and the final, central candle—the Christ Candle—is lit on Christmas Day, representing Christ at the heart of the season.
